Notes

Doctor Who "The New Adventures" series.
Cover illustration by Jon sullivan.
Printed by Cox & Wyman, Reading, Berkshire.

Originally intended for publication in 1996 as a book by Ben Aaronovitch, the release was delayed when Ben's computer hard drive failed. Parts of the book were backed up, others survived as print outs. Kate Orman was recruited to finish the book using the surviving material, with plot and background notes provided to her by the original author. Unfortunately, this was the first of a two-part story (hence the rush to complete), resulting in this book being released after the concluding story (Bad Therapy by Matthew Jones).

Can whoever indexed this book confirm that it was indeed published by the Doctor Who Books imprint? The previous book published - though not the final book chronologically - The Dying Days, was not published under the imprint as it had already been retired. Technically that would mean So Vile a Sin would have just been published by Virgin Publishing. I've never encountered a physical copy of this book so I have no idea what the copyright page says. EDIT (March 2024): I have recently seen the spine and copyright page for this and can confirm it went out under the Doctor Who Books imprint, despite coming out after Dying Days.

Due to the production delay described in the notes, this ended up being the final novel in Virgin's "New Adventures" series to feature the Doctor, in terms of publication order, coming out after The Dying Days, which was the first and only NA release to feature the Eighth Doctor and the line's originally intended finale. After this book, Virgin lost the licence to use the Doctor but continued the line with a series of novels featuring the character Bernice Summerfield that ran for several years before eventually being picked up by the book-publishing arm of Big Finish Productions.
