ppint.🍰 18th Sep 2021		first of the swallows and amazons series of adventure novels, mostly written around sailing in england, in the lake district and then further afield - including on ice, and in the broads - and abroad: #1: ''swallows and amazons'' (1930), (this book) #2: ''swallowdale'' (1931), q.v. #3: ''winter holiday'' (1933), q.v. #4: ''coot club'' (1934), q.v. #5: ''pigeon post'' (1936), q.v. #6: ''we didn't mean to go to sea'' (1937), q.v. #7: ''secret water'' (1939), q.v. #8: ''the big six'' (1940), q.v. #9: ''the picts and the martyrs'' (1943), q.v. #10: ''great northern?'' (1947), q.v. definitely a swallows and amazons novel, as it involves ''captain flint'' as well as the nicknamed old salt: i'm not sure when it sits in the main sequence - or if it really does: it must be set after #6 by internal evidence or lack thereof in the story of that novel; else, it's a novel written by the swallows & amazons: #11: ''peter duck'' (1932), q.v. although involving all six swallows and amazons, and ''captain flint'', and polly, and gibber, and seeing the end of the schooner, the wild cat, this is really a children's fantasy adventure of chinese piracy, almost a historical novel: and which really does not fit within the series very well, unless thought of as a novel written by (one of) them - likely titty: #12: ''missee lee'' (1940 stated in 2001 uk p/b, or 1941), q.v. plus, unfinished at arthur ransome's death in 1967: sections edited by hugh brogan and published with other short material: #?: ''coots in the north'' (1988), q.v.



ppint.🍰 18th Sep 2021		jonathan cape h/cvr first printing, first edition; unillustrated. later editions were illustrated, from 1938 edition on by arthur ransome, himself cover (d-j) art very amateurish-looking line-drawn map with spot colour-tinted edges of lake & colour features, including inset coat-of-arms with supporters lower lefthand quarter cover (d-j) price ??pp. (i was allowed to hold a copy of this in its cellophane(?)-fronted sealed white paper bag, to look at it, but not to open it - given it could be auctioned for £ thousands - or much more, not unreasonable. i suppose. *grump*.)
