| ppint. 30th Jan 2023 | liked by then-junior ace books editor terry carr, but disliked by senior editor don wollheim, the ms. was rejected by ace books in 1965. after the major success of his first man from uncle novel, ''the dagger affair'' (ace 1965) and the success of his second such, ''the vampire affair'' (ace 1966), he was invited to re-submit it, and it was published after being shortened by about 2k words: the cut scene, a tuckerisation of one of his friends, appeared in the fanzine, the best of apa-L no. 3 ed. lee gold (1972). david mcdaniel's last, unpublished, man from uncle novel, ''the final affair'' was commisioned to appear as the man from uncle novel #24 (ace mmpb numbering sequence), but wasn't completed until after the merkin t.v. network ended the series, and ace books was no longer interested in it; however, it was widely circulated in handwritten copies within man from uncle fandom, and later made available as a .pdf at http://www.spywise.net/pdf/jan_10/TheFinalAffair.pdf this may still be available via the waybackmachine. | |

| annaloog ● 27th Jan 2023 | JAG, but I gather that when Ace began its transition from letter-prefixed numbers to 5-digit numbers, the G prefix was replaced with '07' (G is the 7th letter of the alphabet). I have copies of a few Vance and Farmer titles with these G-/'020' numbers. | |
