mayflower books ltd. was set up by dell publishing, inc. (or some part thereof) as a wholly-owned uk subsidiary in 1962.
it was not consistent in whether it badged its books as mayflower or mayflower dell (usually no hyphen on covers, separation of the two words by the mayflower logo-let in the logo iyswim) - sometimes being inconsistent in different places in the same printings of its books.
bookcat currently recognises mayflower books ltd.'s mayflower and mayflower-dell (with hyphen) imprints as separate ''publishers''.
bookcat practice is to identify separate imprints as separate publishers.
i have no idea what - if anything - the terminal ''- 8'' added to (some) mayflower and mayflower dell imprint books indicated. i have attempted to discern a logical pattern, on more than one occasion, but have given up. i'm not sure it meant anything in particular. not all of mayflower books ltd.'s listings of (selections of) their books with their cat#s match the actual cat#s on the books as to whether they carry terminal ''-8''s.
dell publishing, inc. (or whatever the merkin holding company by then was) sold mayflower books ltd. to the uk granada conglomerate in 1967, which eventually included it in granada publishing - this changed in precise name from time to time too - after which its history becomes that of the granada publishing group, though for quite a while the imprint seems to've been maintained as a separate, though wholly-owned, limited liability company.
not very much that corporate publishers do makes very much sense to most of the people employed by the publishers - let alone, people outside them attempting to work with them.
That's an "8"? I looked at it three ways, with progressive levels of magnification, and the suffix still looks more like a "B".
The "Mayflower-Dell" titles I looked at before creating this entry show as "Mayflower" ... presumably an arrangement with USA publisher Dell (or parent Delacorte), as the latter has a "Mayflower" imprint.
