 Oh and by the way, there actually was a "Bible to be read as Literature" book that likely would have still been in circulation at the time: see here.. When I found my copy of that at first I just saw the cover and thought I'd found this book, but alas far too many pages!

 @David Whiteley - thanks for scanning the "fake" jacket. I've never seen an image of that part of the cover before. If memory serves I think it's a reference to something either Bond or another character actually uses in one of the Fleming novels.

 One bit of interesting trivia about the hardcover first edition is that its dust jacket could be reversed to disguise it as something else (I think a version of the Bible). Is it possible for the person who uploaded the first edition cover scan to upload the reverse? I don't think it's been widely seen. Sadly the paperback edition by Pan couldn't do this.

 This book should be listed under the name Kingsley Amis as Tanner was the pen name used by Amis for this. Correction submitted. [Mod - corrected].
