in 1980, the penguin on whose desk the remnants of the penguin sf list had been dumped asked me if i could get in touch with brian aldiss as they were reprinting - or had reprinted, and were now re-reprinting - this omnibus again, and they had a cheque for royalties for him and the various authors, for him to divide up and send off the various contributors and their agents - which news yr hmbl srppnt. conveyed to him - to his great surprise:
the contracts under which he'd edited the three separate anthologies - and that for the omnibus - made it explicit that the responsibility for keeping track of and paying royalties to the contributing authors or their agents, as might be appropriate, was strictly that of penguin books.
i thanked him for the information, and enquired what his charge(s) might be for supplying the penguin° with copy/ies of his contract(s), in case the penguin° ''just happened'' to've lost, mislaid, or thrown away their copy or copies of the contract(s), plus record of earlier royalty payments - should he ''just happen'' to have any records at all dating as far back as to 1961, 63 & 64, perhaps; or even ''just'' to 1973; brian noted my grin but apologised(!) that he'd only definitely be able to supply copies of the great penguin's contracts with him - and perhaps of the sums he'd originally agreed with the authors or their agents for the original anthologies' publications.
(i don't know what the ultimate outcome was - i was only advising the relevant editorial penguin, and not party to manglementpenguins' decisions.)
