Notes

New edition of the first Simon Templar "The Saint" novel, originally published as "Meet the Tiger" and later as "The Saint in Danger". This edition includes a newly written introduction by Charteris, who tended to consider this novel a "false start" to the franchise and often referred to "Enter the Saint" as the first proper Simon Templar book. Copyright page erroneously gives year of first publication as 1929 (likely referring to the first US edition; UK first edition was 1928). 310 pages.

23skidoo 22nd Sep 2020		A few thoughts on this book (this isn't a review, however). Although I had read some Saint books before, it was reading this very first Saint novel 10-11 years ago that inspired me to try to read the entire Simon Templar canon (with some breaks here and there, I am up to 1953's The Saint in Europe as I write this in September 2020). I find it intriguing that Charteris would not only apparently dislike this novel, he even tried to "decanonize" it by claiming for many years that Enter the Saint, a later release, was the actual first Saint book. I'm glad he relented and allowed Tiger to be republished as I thought it was a very strong story, a good intro for Simon, and it was a terrific showcase for Patricia Holm, who was Simon's lover and partner in crime for the first decade of the series before Charteris phased her out in the 1940s in favour of "James Bonding" Simon with a succession of romances. I found the Simon-Patricia dynamic felt very similar to the John Steed-Emma Peel dynamic of The Avengers, only with the romance angle being less subtle than the TV show and I can say her presence is missed in the books in which she doesn't appear.
