6th printing of the 1977 Viking edition of the 1969 revised Penguin/Pelican Books collected text. General editor Alfred Harbage; each play is edited by different individuals, including Northrup Frye. Copyright page and title page give title as "William Shakespeare: The Complete Works" while the spine title is "The Complete Pelican Shakespeare". 1986 printing was issued without a dust jacket. 1,486 pages.

23skidoo 29th Aug 2020		When indexing books, my rule of thumb is the title used on the title page and/or copyright page takes precedent over the title as presented on the cover (with differences indicated in the Notes). For this one I had to include the "alternate" title in square brackets in the title field because the title/copyright page uses a title that is likely used by many, many different editions, and when it comes to Shakespeare people are particular about different editions being kept separate. As an aside, this was the textbook I used in university and it still remains the best-presented, easiest to read edition of Shakespeare I've come across (and as such, it's the only university text I still read 30 years later). Among other things, since they weren't worried about keeping the page count as low as possible, character names are not abbreviated, which is something that I've always found annoying in collected Shakespeare editions. I also forgot to mention in the Notes that this book also includes a photographic reproduction of the opening pages of the 1623 folio, which is cool.
