 Despite the somewhat confused reaction of Brooks core audience, this album still managed to sell well over 2 million copies and nearly topped the Billboard 200 chart. It is actually a pretty decent effort by him and was originally conceived as a vehicle to promote his foray into pop music territory and garner interest in this music style before releasing a proposed movie of "the life of Chris Gaines" to be entitled "The Lamb". Subsequently the film was never made due to a number of reasons (Financial and management related).

When originally released in the U.S. the album was titled "Chris Gaines Greatest Hits". It appears to have been promoted as "Garth Brooks in...the life of Chris Gaines" outside of North America. The back of the CD booklet on the original U.S. release has the second title printed, but is upside down from the rest of the booklet. Probably to indicate that the "Greatest Hits" should be the front cover here.
