Thanks, good to know the list (but as already commented before, it's not strictly chronological: ...I have my doubts about whether the catalogue numbers used by Polygram at this stage were chronological because 800 012-2 is Abba's Greatest Hits Volume 2, which came out in 1984.).

KennyG said: Another neat feature of those early Polydor CDs, which you may already be aware of, is that if you lift up the top right corner of the black plastic on the CD case, the CDs catalogue number is printed on the rear of the back cover. This occurs on coated and early uncoated Polars, so I guess it would be the same for Polydors.

I can confirm that my disk has these too.

Got it on eBay about 5 years ago from a fellow in Germany. Its selling point was exactly that it was the first commercially made CD in Germany, being to my knowledge the first country outside of Japan making CD's, but I'm no expert guys.

Footnote. I worked with a guy whose wife got him a Philips CD player Philips CD100 the day it came out and being also his birthday, and a couple of CDs to start him going. That was March 1983 in the UK. So my point is, I gave the ABBA The Visitors a 1983 date based on that fact! If it was sold in 1982 then how could you play the disk?

That means that the current record notes (This album is the First CD manufactured by Polygram at Hanover, West Germany making it the first in the world for general sale to the public.) have to be adjusted too. I propose the following:
This album is the first CD manufactured by PolyGram at Hanover, West Germany, for general sale to the public, making it the first in the world outside Japan.

Also from that thread, with reference to the PolyGram CD catalogue numbering system:

93curr said:
why is the 'ABBA/Visitors' catalog # 800-011-2? if it's the first prototype, wouldn't it be 800-001-2? what were 001-010?

KennyG said:
The Visitors wasn't a prototype. It was commercially released and remained in print until 1997. I have my doubts about whether the catalogue numbers used by Polygram at this stage were chronological because 800 012-2 is Abba's Greatest Hits Volume 2, which came out in 1984.

As for 800 001-2 to 800 010-2, I don't know what they were. It seems the catalogue numbers began at 800 011-2 for some reason.

There's an interesting discussion about the first commercial CD ever released on an old (June/July 2005) thread on forums.stevehoffman.tv. Whereas it is beyond dispute that Billy Joel's 52nd Street CD was first commercially released in Japan in October 1982, it seems that The Visitors CD, manufactured by PolyGram in Hannover, West Germany, and presented to ABBA around September 1982, didn't reach the record shops before 1983 (like it was entered by wordnwot here).

From this discussion:

KeithH said:
I have a West German pressing of The Visitors on Polydor with catalog number 810 011-2. The disc has an orange coating with black text, which is Polydor's original design. Perhaps this is the very first version of The Visitors released. I don't know the chronology between the West German Polydor and Polar discs. ...

KennyG said:
That's the one I was talking about. That was the first version of The Visitors released and the one demonstrated to Bjorn and Benny by Polygram in 1982.

The brief chronology of the Polygram / Polar Abba early CD changes are:
1. Orange Polydor Label (1982 releases -- The Visitors ?? only)
2. Blue Polar Label (light blue coating with royal blue text -- 1983, 1984 releases)
3. No coating Polar label (royal blue text -- from c.1985 ?)
4. Standard Polydor Rings (phased in from about 1987 onwards)

Coated versions are the hardest ones to get and I never knew that the orange Polydor made it beyond prototype stage until today.

My copy of this album on CD from Germany was evidently from a later pressing, acquired after 1988. It's good that at least one "fab four" had the first commercial CD release in the world. The correct spelling of the composer and band member's surname is ANDERSSON.

[mod: composers corrected, also Bjorn to Björn]

Obviously a very dear item to own. Did you buy it early in the 1980s in a shop or later at an auction?
