| | My red swirl copy has the same Catalogue number and the same barcode,
but has BIEM/STEMRA on the label instead of GEMA and misses the words
"digitally remastered" on the label. The CD label says "Made in Germany" and not "Made in Germany by Polygram" |

| | Seems they changed the disc in the packaging, then the packaging around the disc.
@Greg:
I'm going to add my red swirl (identical to the disc here) to the other page, as having found two with identical packaging in the same day at a boot fair, it has to be more than just a mistake that my disc is in that packaging.
@Lee:
This may not be the most thrilling album in the world (I do like it though -Sultans included :), but the exact same process that happened to vinyl in the early nineties with the arrival of the CD is happening right now, as we speak with CDs.... People can't seem to shovel the things out the door fast enough in order to go download / stream, and whereas everybody now seems to be aware of vinyl resurrection, and has begun to charge accordingly (hard to find stuff out there now, at least that doesn't cost the earth), CDs can be had by the bag full now for a few pennies, and pockets of collectability are taking shape; Check out:
Mercury Green Arrow
Philips Blue Face / Blue Arrow
Target CDs (and non-targets / pre-targets etc.)
Polydor Red Face
as well as these Vertigos.
I remember in the early nineties, when this was happening to vinyl, there was a guy I used to see around the boot fairs asking: "Any Swirls?" of everybody... we thought he was nuts, but when I think of the times I pulled some form boxes and handed them to him, I want to weep at what I could have had...
Not making the same mistake with CDs... it's bonanza time with these right now, and with Mercury Green arrows already fetching over £100 regardless of artist / title, these treasures are still a rich vein to be mined cheaply (and so I can always come away from a boot-fair / charity shop with something interesting at least.
Buy 'em all... once they're gone (in someone's collection, or at the tip), they're gone. |

| | And after all that work folks... this is a really boring record. Well, it was until it became a CD then look what happened - they added the more boring B sides. I bought this when it came out, recycled it in a week and wished I'd bought the single instead. Time has obliterated that wish and I now never want to hear "Sultans Of Swing" or this album ever again. No-one was predicting the impending global Dire Straits mania around the corner on the strength of this album. File under unassuming debut albums. |

| | Yes,that's a good idea MM,add a scan of your red fan Disc that also came in the 1983 barcode/artwork package to the first blue fan issue (link below),the thing is though,when you compare that red fan Disc that came in said artwork below here to nicoldo64's scan (image 340148),you may notice that the "Digitally Mastered,GEMA,1978 Phogram Ltd,London." text is on the right-hand side of the Disc instead of the left-hand,so,if yours has that text on the right,then it's probably contemporary with that artwork,if not,then it might be later,can you see where i'm coming from?
(you see don't i;) |

| | So perhaps just add a Red Swirl scan to the other entry, so there's one on each page, as the Red swirl appeared in both packaging types (Barcodes / cats)?
(Add this in notes to both too).
>> But which one do I say I "Own" ?! :( << |

gregs45s SUBS 10th Jul 2017
| | I'd leave it as it is perhaps MM,as there is a difference in barcode,and therefore,it warrants a separate entry.Also,it would pay to keep the first release separate anyhow,as there are many reissues (to be added here also) using the 0422...barcode variation,and it probably will become International at some point as i can see at least a Canadian and Australian issue (sharing the same details) on Discogs.Perhaps just add to notes about the Disc colour order sequence for now?. |

| | Well that's thrown a sizable spanner in the works!
...I got one of these yesterday, with the Red Vertigo Swirl.
(Encouraged by finding a target disc the other week, I wanted to see if I could find other collectible CD types, so as to have examples in my collection at least)
But mine has come in the case and packaging shown in the Blue Vertigo Swirl listing, linked below... and I found another one identical to it about five minutes later, so I can say it is not an anomaly.
This should, I think, mean that the Blue Vertigo Swirl page ought to be merged with this page, and the discs presented in order as pressing variations:
1st: Blue Swirl
2nd: Red Swirl
3rd: Yellow face
etc.
And it seems that the packaging varies too, but all should be the same thing.
But the barcode difference is the thing that upsets that idea...
Thoughts? |

| | mods: my 1996 sbm (super bit mapping) "dire straits remastered" edition with the same vertigo cat# and bar-code no. has two "extra" tracks: 8. wild west end & 9. lions. these are also listed on the back insert depicted. remastered by bob ludwig at gateway mastering. disc reverse: 800 051 2 70A (superscript:) made in france by universal m & l (= music & leisure). © 1996 & (p) 1996 on disc as well as back insert.
given the remastering, this edition should have its own "cdcat" entry despite having the same vertigo cat# & bar-code no. no?
