| | The March 23, 1985 issue of Billboard magazine has this CD listed in the new releases section on page 19. Probably when the Columbia issue came out. |

| | I found an interesting article on Compact Disc History confirming that the first CBS/Sony issues of Wish You Were Here were made in Japan and shipped late in June 1983. These "had the CBS logo (and mastering numbers in the DIDP 50000 series). Later, these were reissued with Columbia logos, but these remain as examples of the earliest American CD releases." The article also says that "almost all the CDs sold under US labels for the first few years were either made in Japan or West Germany". It was only in Sep 1984 when "the first large US plant, a Sony subsidiary, Digital Audio Disc Corporation (DADC) opened in Terre Haute, Indiana".
That means we can add the June 1983 release month and Columbia as an additional label, but have to leave CBS as the main label. It may be debatable if we maintain USA as country, as these CDs were also sold in other non-European countries (Japan however had different cat#s). |

| | Thanks, PhilMH. As the first Made in Japan CDs for the USA had the Columbia label on the disc at least, like the one displayed here, I propose that we make Columbia the label for the US issue and CBS one of the "other labels". You may be right that those CD issues with the CBS label on the disc were intended for sale outside the USA (not in Europe though which was covered by EMI). As I've seen no package of this issue not pointing to CBS Records, CBS Inc., New York, which didn't exist before 1988 as far as I know, I also propose adding 1988 as the release year of the US issue. |

| | I would think that this is a few years earlier than 1991, as the package still shows a company credit for CBS Inc. For a year or two after the record company was first sold to Sony, the company name in the US was changed to CBS Records Inc. It's a bit of an oddity that the box shows a CBS logo rather than a Columbia one, because the label has always been Columbia in the USA and Canada, with the CBS name being used internationally after the early 1950's because other companies (mostly EMI, but also Discos Columbia in Spain, and Nippon Columbia in Japan) owned the Columbia name in those territories. The original LP was on Columbia in the US, and CBS elsewhere. A possibility is that these were able to be exported to countries where CBS had the rights to the album but not the Columbia name, e.g Australia, where there were no CD factories operational in the late 80's. |

So this speaks more for my first guess, a 1991 release date. |

| | Doing some more research on the net, I found some images of the first US issue manufactured in Japan, and the "Made in Japan" CD actually has the Columbia Walking Eye logo and the cat# CK 33453, whereas the back cover (the same as displayed here) refers to CBS Records and has the CBS Walking Eye logo. So the first CDs pressed in the USA, whenever that was, may have had the Columbia logo too. |

| | I'm only guessing though. There are similar combinations of disc and package attributed to earlier release years by users on the net, also people who suggest that the first discs pressed by Japanese CBS/Sony had the Columbia logo. Actually CBS/Sony existed before 1988 in Japan, and this CD was sold in the USA with a long box only indicating to Columbia Records. Maybe kab2112 or some other owner of the US issue can illuminate us. |

| | This American CBS issue was most probably first released in 1988, when the CBS Records Group, including the Columbia Records unit, was acquired by Sony. According to the package, the record was originally manufactured in Japan by CBS/Sony, Tokyo, and on later issues "Now Made In The U.S.A." there is still the CBS label on the CD face. On the displayed disc, however, the Columbia trademark was used again, so it was possibly made in 1991, when the CBS Records label was officially renamed Columbia Records, or later. |
