Hi
Discogs separates releases even if the changes are minor, so, they will add a new entry if, like the one you found, has a different Retail Price Code or if the Disc is pressed elsewhere, whearas we don't on this site, as long as the country/label/Cat. No./barcode matches exactly, then we can add variants to an existing entry, just scanning the items that differ to what's already added.
The Retail Price codes can differ on similar releases over time, so, here changed PM 500 instead of PM 570 (PM =Pathé Marconi - EMI)(the presence of Retail Price Codes, normally on the rear tray artwork and normally 2 letters followed by 3 numbers are also a good indicator that the CD was distributed in Europe as they were used at the point of sale/on the till's in Europe, we did not use this system in the UK) , so, just a Price code change or a different pressing matrix does not warrant a separate entry, so, as long as the four main indicators match, you can add scans to the existing entry i mentioned.
cheers

Yes, the link you refer is very close but then I found this one, with unknown release year. One difference is this code F: PM 500 instead of PM 570. And there is difference in the digits marked on the Matrix / Runout.
@mrblond
Hi, i wonder, is it this one?, if so, it can be added to this one already on this site (although it says UK at the moment, i have put in a request to change it to Europe), just add scans of anything that differs to the UK entry, probably just the rear tray artwork and the Disc, unless the back of the booklet differs as well, and note "Made In Holland" in the image decsription.
cheers
Greg
Hey, I own this CD and everything is mostly the same as on the uploaded images here except it is marked "Manufactured in Holland" and has different barcode.
Should I add it as another item?
Found another copy of this today... but whereas I'd have left it usually - already having got one - This one caught my eye by having the "Virgin Records" wording on one spine edge in blue letters, and the usual green on the other spine...
...looking inside, I see the label print is black, not green, and is made in Austria.
Given that this entry has been given now as Europe, do I add the Austrian copy scan here?
(Barcode and cat# are the same...only "manufactured in Austria" on disc otherwise)
Ha,yes indeed ;)
It is interesting to note perhaps that Discogs has 5 variations of GEN CD2,and that all 5 are under "Virgin",the only one that's under "Virgin/Charisma" is a Japanese issue (different Cat.No.but same date) which is the only one i can see with the Charisma logo actually on the Disc itself label, here http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=1097405,so although they can get things wrong,it's not often that they do so 5 times (i think someone would have noticed;),so i would go for Virgin (it could always be changed at a later date if some new info comes to light).
PS I think this entry still needs to be changed to "International" as it was also issued in Australia with the same Cat.No/barcode
which is of course why, despite the self-same virgin records name and sole logo's presence on both disc and rear card insert, and the bar-code number all being identical with those of 45worlds item gencd2uk, and differing in just the format-identification digit & check digit from the simultaneously-released virgin label cassette, and the complete absence of either of the former charisma labels's logos, this must here be given as being on the charisma label - as precisely none of those, nor the 45worlds item, genpcd2, is so given.
- but of course, manic marmalade'll be rebadging both of these (the cassette isn't up on "45tape" - yet) as being upon the charisma label without delay.
(- for the record, i do not doubt that the tracks were recorded for tony stratton smith's charisma records ltd, and intended for release upon the charisma label - but virgin bought the company assets in 1986 - and tony smith died early the following year.
- virgin pretty clearly regarded their own branding of their "product" as being of prime importance, and it is solely due to the copyright and publication of the records having been registered by charisma records ltd prior to their release, in the event by virgin records, on the virgin label - as is quite normal - that charisma records ltd is mentioned on the cd disc & packaging.)
(n.b. - there's no such thing as a patent upon specific recordings - unique processes may be patentable, and may or may not actually be patented, but musical and other recordings are not.)
The copyright and patent are for Charisma... the label that Genesis were signed to before Virgin got it... I know the genesis-ers usually refer to these first press CDs as Charisma, Virgin/Charisma, and then just plain Virgin fo the later ones as Virigin gradually took control of the branding.
...But this is the first issue of this CD, and was Virgin/Charisma when released, whereas earlier albums were released on Charisma first only, but Virgin popped their brand on later issues (And CDs of those earlier albums.
(I think we need a thread just for contentious issues on any format, where if one pops up that has a lot of issues that can't be resolved in commentisms then it's put before the community for a vote or summat - (?))
P.S - F.Y.I - P.P.I.N.T - This was released previous millenium. agreed that anything that happened in the world after 2000 is meaningless, but sadly did take place anhoo. L.O.L - O.M.G - R.S.V.P - E.T.C.
- virgin - or somecatter might make a case for "gen(esis)": but certainly not stratton-smith's (iirc) "charisma", which hasn't existed this - millennium?
Actually, following on from the other comments, shouldn't this be under Virgin Records? It appears on the spine and the logo is on the disc and rear cover.
I suppose we'll get this troublesome one right in the end...
A quick search shows that this is indeed the UK issue, but it was also issued in Australia with exactly the same Cat.No./barcode,so this should be "International".The 2nd? issue European CD that cptbeefheart has just entered is correct as it stands, and should not be merged as it has a secondary Cat.No.,so that's fine as it is.(you see don't i ;)
Addenda : Check that,it appears that there is a Dutch version of cptbeefheart's entry as well (same Cat/barcode inc secondary Cat),so it will need to be changed to Europe.,sorry.
