Duke_J SUBS 29th Oct 2022		CD Album Anita O'Day - Jazz Manifesto (2008)	This is in effect a reissue of Anita Sings For Oscar, itself including the whole of "Anita Sings the Most" (Verve, 1957), with pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown, and drummers Milt Holland or John Poole. The whole is a very good quality remastering.

Duke_J SUBS 5th Apr 2021		CD Album Peggy Lee - The Collection (2006)	A fine collection of jazz classics by Peggy Lee, well mastered from various sources: you can hear the record surface on some, which could probably have been de-clicked but at least they didn't just muffle the sound and make it unacceptable to anyone who wants to listen to it rather than have it on in the background Oh for some detailed record notes, but they do at least list the bands on each track. "Summertime" has become such a corny old classic, but here she takes the song in a completely individual manner, elegantly backed with the ensemble The Four Of A Kind [YouTube Video]

Duke_J SUBS 15th Dec 2020		CD Album Roadside Picnic - Roadside Picnic (1989)	Review The band seem to have taken their name from the sci-fi novel Roadside Picnic by Arkadi and Boris Strugatsky. They continue in the style of "The Canterbury Scene" which was centred around artists including Matching Mole, Gong, Robert Wyatt and Kevin Ayers. The track titles are obtuse too, but the tunes are sweet and richly harmonic, in a style close to jazz but without the repeating changes. Duke_J SUBS 17th Nov 2020		CD Album Don Grusin And Bill Sharpe - Trans Atlantica (2012)	I expect you're right: this Bill Sharpe is the American jazz bassist, so we can conclude that the jazz albums State Of The Heart and Kingdom Of Fitzrovia are his. The Shakatak Hits album is the British keyboardist and arranger.

Duke_J SUBS 26th Apr 2018		CD Album Carmen McRae - Book Of Ballads (2015)	Review 27 tracks, all but one with sparkling big-band arrangements, and every one about that most vacuous of song topics, "Love", perfectly forgettable, even I Couldn't Care Less which had been crooned by Bing Crosby. The one exception is where she is accompanied by Don Abney on piano in a fine version of the unforgettable Angel Eyes. It is only a shame that the last line is cut short: this seems to have happened with two Carmen McRae compilations and I'd love to know if it was missing on the original Kapp LP. Somewhere the end of the tape with the words "while I disappear" and probably a piano coda, has dropped on the cutting-room floor.
