Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs (1998)
Review
Would you believe me if I said I'd never heard this album before?!!

Well, while that is true, in the round, it's one of those that it turns out I'd heard some of the songs without even knowing it... by way of it's cultural impact.

(One of those that seems to have gotten everywhere)

"Ooh, I know that one!"

(...Being my frequent response since first listen on my MP3 player in the wee smalls whilst laid up with shoulder injury these past days, and waiting for the pain-killers to kick in)

Only got around to listening to it now, having found it in the charity shop the other day, and wondering why I didn't sekk it out upon original release. My conclusion being that it was one of those fantastically overhyped bands / albums who's obsequious gushing praise by critics, and how I simply MUST own this record was enough to produce the opposite effect on me back in the day.

But now I've heard it, listening to it at last on my own terms, and in my own time, I immediately hear the obvious similarities between Mercury Rev and The Flaming Lips, and acknowledge the well documented association.

However, Mercury Rev seem (On this one album's evidence alone) to be more of a tenderly melodic variety of that kind of music, as well as more consistently memorable and haunting.

So it was a great, serendipitous choice of mine to give this a go on a very low and soothing volume as I cosied up in bed, waiting for the painkiller cavalry to arrive and offer some relief... This album acting as a kind of lullabies at sunrise to keep me company in the meantime.

In fact, to characterise the songs, would be to say they are like audio versions of Rothko paintings, lightly framed in Christmas tinsel...

...But that may be the painkillers talking :)

Naturally, I am now, true to my own form, now currently, completely obsessed with this album, with each of the songs now slowly, but ever so surely worming their way through the thick albumen of my ignorance, into the golden yoke of my better, basic-brain.

All that of course, remains to be said, is...

YOU MUST OWN THIS ALBUM!!!!!!!!!

:)

Hey chums...

...Have created a new entry for Japan only entry, and moved Kei's images over - made the necessary alteration to primary cat, and removed release date from it.

These details - barcode - release date etc. can be added there by going to our old friend: "Add Missing Info".

This new entry is linked below, and this one here has been (provisionally) changed to International.

Ooops - big pile of bum!

Could you give me extra parts on tracks 35 and 36 again Please, I read the first part of your comment, edited it, then read the second part asking to bump them down - but I'd lost those in the edit!

- So I've just added the basic track title for each, and just needs the extra - Sorry about that.

Yes, it was the reputation that built this up in mind over the years... Of course, I'd heard, and love the banana album, and kind of knew this was considered a bit of a Marmite album, but that implied there was something about this that could make people like, as well as dislike it, in equal measure...

...But I just don't hear it. This album is a muffled lazy fart of an album that is barely strong enough to form a memory of, let alone whether you like or dislike it.

If it were a photograph, you'd be squinting to see the trace of an image due to it's underexposure... And they are trying to tell us it's on purpose.

A more succinct review would be:

100% half-hearted affectation.

Review
What a tedious, weak album!

If I were to characterise this, I would imagine the conversation that preceded it's creation:

"Hey guys, we've used up our one great idea about what this band is (And our fifteen minutes of fame :), so let's make an album that sounds like we're trying to be Bob Dylan (and the Band), and also, at the same time, trying to be a bit Of David Bowie, and maybe a dash of John Lennon (after the Beatles - and the non singles, album stuff)...

... But also, let's do all this as if we were a first time high school band naively trying to be those things, and really not quite getting there"

I had looked forward to finally listening to this when I found this CD a couple of weeks back, but it is painfully dull and amateurish, like The Velvet Underground trying to be like The Velvet Underground, and acting as their own crappy tribute band.

This is going back to the charity shop, as I can't afford the space on the shelf for it.

Yay... another of my favourites found in Digipak!

This is one that I love, but have absolutely no intention of getting on vinyl, due to the nature of the music - a lot like Air: Moon Safari - in that you just want to put it on, and drift away from one end to the other, without having to mess about with flipping sides half way through your comatose state.

The CD sounds great anyway - very balanced, very expansive and spacious, as well as spacey.

I'm sorry but my brain just exploded.

>Please stand by<

:)

I do feel this exactly the kind of crap that saw the end of EMI.

I'll have a think about this - leaning more toward the two separate entries scenario, as a label is a substantial difference - especially as I don't think I see Parlophone anywhere on the EMI one - torpedoing the discogs assertion that it's "not a label".

(Will look again tomorrow, with fresh eyes)

Why would there be two separate label versions released at the same time with all the same details?

Is this when Parlophone folded, or was folded into EMI?

...In which case, one must have come before the other, surely?

Annie Lennox - Medusa (1995)
The Neil Young cover: Don't Let It Bring You Down, is my current obsession.

Although I've known it a long time time now from the movie: American Beauty.

(Not, however, included on the soundtrack issues for that movie, despite having a very significant place in it)

...But I never really had any kind of relationship with the song beyond the superficial since then, until it just popped up randomly one day on my mp3, and it has made a home for itself in my head since then.

What seems odd, is that she never released this as a single in it's own right, even though it's probably not only perhaps the strongest track on this album, it might be one of the best cover versions around.

Would perhaps be a nice idea to have a split 7" release of this with Neil Young's original on the other side?

(maybe in a nice, rose petal designed sleeve?)

Stranglers - In The Night (1993)
An odd one.

I'm going to leave the current lead image as first, as the translucent red jewel case, through which the white booklet / cover is shown is part of the original packaging, and how it would be expected to be initially found.

Of course, if someone finds this with replacement clear case, they will only see the white cover, and may think they have a different issue, but this will serve as a note regarding that.

((However - thought does occur that the red case may have been only a limited edition scenario, and later copies may simply come in clear cases, in which case, it would be white! - Is this the case? - which, therefore, would be more representative of this item / issue?))

I don't see the difference Greg, based on what's on page, other than Disco's images have spines to confirm cat, minus CBS prefix...

(Both, are in fact wrong, as this is a Columbia release, not a CBS one - so wrong label added by GEMSFAN in first place, but both are SBM, featuring logo on back, and label codes are the same too.)

So I will simply change the label to correct designation, and then if there is a CBS version, that would require new entry (if not already on site) with appropriate images.
