rhythmdog ● 3rd Dec 2023 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - The Doo Wop Box III (2000) | The biggest negative for me is there is no booklet accompaniment. It would have been nice to read about the various celebrities' choices and their reasons for the picks (CD 3). I guess Rhino cheaped out.

rhythmdog ● 31st May 2022 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Chicken Shack Boogie (1997) | This series is actual CD's, not CDR's. Likely not actually from Kingston, Jamaica, as asserted on the CD's. However, the concept is Jamaican. These US R&B cuts were what the Sound System men of the mid-50's brought back from their trips to New Orleans and other Southern US locales to play at outdoor dances in Kingston in the mid-50's.
As such, they are the very source for "Jamaican R&B" and later Ska, because in the late 50's, as this style of music dried up in the US, the impressarios of Jamaica turned to local talent to replicate the sound no longer available in the US (that the US R&B sound dried up in 1959 with the "Payola Scandal" should make it clear that the major labels were struggling to compete with the smaller R&B labels but were capable of using their clout to sic the law on their competitors - not because they were more "moral" but because they had better lawyers! - and much worse music!!!)

rhythmdog ● 5th Jul 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - A Million Dollars Worth Of Doo-Wop Volume 6 (1995) | I should add, even the titles and the group names have occasionally been mangled as these CD's were perhaps too hurriedly rushed out. Or perhaps there was some attempt to disguise the correct titles and artists to make it more difficult for other collectors to track down some of the items.
For whatever reason, the name of the group on track 4 is actually "Georgie Torrence And The Dippers". The name of the group on track 12 is "Murphreesboro" singular and without "The". The name of the group on track 13 is "Little Prince And The Freeloaders". The title on track 9 is "What Is Your Name".
rhythmdog ● 4th Jul 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Harmony Classics Volume 2 | Track 4, "Love Me" by Willie And Ruth (Spark label) is the original to the Elvis Presley cover.
"Close Your Eyes" by The Admirals (King label( is a cover of the 5 Keys original on Capitol.
rhythmdog ● 4th Jul 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Group Classics | There are numerous typos and spelling inconsistencies among the three sources of information: inside front cover, back cover and disc. I did my best to provide correct information. An example is the first track. Grammatically, it should say "Please Tell Me You're Mine". However, I know from multiple sources that the original single actually says "Please Tell Me Your Mine", which is shown on the inside front cover, but not on the back cover nor on the disc.

rhythmdog ● 26th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumDJ Shadow And Cut Chemist - Brainfreeze (1999) | There may be more than one edition of this CD. My copy was made in England from where it was imported back into the US!, but the CD was originally produced in the US. My copy has no information regarding the source 45's which is why I refer those interested to the discogs page. Also, my copy apparently has a different front cover than the release at discogs.
The label of the CD is a copy of one of the records used in the mix- a 45 sold at 7-11 stores in the 1960's to hype the slurpy.

rhythmdog ● 21st Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumLucky Millinder - Ram-Bunk-Shush (1991) | It certainly looks a lot like it's Bull Moose Jackson standing in the blued-out portion of the front cover beside Lucky Millinder.
rhythmdog ● 20th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - The Mercury Blues 'N' Rhythm Story 1945-1955 (1996) | It appears to be the case that each of the eight CD's have been individually released by Universe in Italy. So far no one has yet documented the final two CD's, but since the first 6 were released, I'd guess the last two were, also.
rhythmdog ● 17th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Hardcore Doo-Wop In The Hallway (1993) | On track 12, the name of the group accompanying Benn (Joe) Zeppa is misspelled: it should be "Zephyrs", not "Zephers"

rhythmdog ● 13th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumBob Marley - Reggae Roots (1993) | It should be noted that this Excelsior label is clearly related to the following other designations:
Excelsior Classic Gold (Canada)
Polygram / Excelsior
and probably to this one:
Excelsior (Canada)

rhythmdog ● 13th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumBob Marley - Selassie Is The Chapel: Complete Bob Marley And The Wailers Part 1 (1999) | I do not actually own this CD, only a CD-R. I have added an image of the box set cover, since I cannot find a decent image of the Selassie CD.

rhythmdog ● 10th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumThe Ethiopians - Let's Ska And Rock Steady (1992) | This CD has been released several times over the years on various labels.
rhythmdog ● 7th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumScreamin' Jay Hawkins - Stone Crazy (1993) | Also exists as a Bizarre/Straight CD, US release. Same bar code, perhaps. (I only own a CDR of the tracks)
rhythmdog ● 7th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumRosco Gordon - T-Model Boogie (1997) | Given the various sources for these tracks (Sun, Vee Jay, Duke, RPM) obtaining rights would have been difficult. Add to that the lack of a bar code and I think it's fair to say that this is an "unofficial" release by the "Official" label!
rhythmdog ● 7th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumBabs Gonzales - Cool Whalin' | Almost certainly 'unofficial'; was sold as a regular CD. Very amateurish graphics.
It is, however, the most complete compendium of Babs' singles in existence.

rhythmdog ● 6th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumMartha Davis - You're On The Right Track Baby (1987) | This CD likely duplicates a Swedish LP on the Jukebox Lil label, which has yet to be documented.
rhythmdog ● 5th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - The Beat Generation (1992) | Note: the 3 cd's have nearly identical covers, with the color and volume number varied.
rhythmdog ● 4th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumBob Dylan - The Bootleg Series Volumes 1 (1997) | This box set was originally issued - in a long box format with a booklet and the same tracks - as Columbia 47382, bar code 7484 47382 2 in 1991. Just wanted to note this is a reissue of that set, which was also issued in Europe. See links below.

rhythmdog ● 3rd Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumBlossom Dearie - Verve Jazz Masters 51 (1996) | I own a US pressing of this. Same bar code, slightly different legalese at the very bottom of the back cover.
