Turbulence 2: Fear Of Flying (1999) (1999)
Rated 7/10
Another airplane disaster movie, but this one combines action and drama with some comedy and absurd, unbelievable plot twists. Though I see low ratings for this film elsewhere, I find most of the characters interesting and appealing, the bad guys very bad. A quirky, endearing, enjoyable, fast moving, surprising entertainment.

Gory. Pointless. Felt sorry for the cast. The screenshots from credits tell the story. (Saw this at Halloween). Beware.

The Violent Years (1956) (1956)
Review
This film is difficult to rate. It's so bad that it merits viewing! Girl delinquents rob, kill, one even rapes a man! The parents of the lead, Jean Moorhead (Paula), never notice their daughter is a total psychopath. Paula ends up unwed, pregnant, and unrepentant, though she pays the ultimate price for her crimes. An unbelievably unbelievable and weird movie. (Generally known as an Ed Wood film).

Sabor A Mí (1988) (1988)
Review
A musical biography of Mexican songwriter Álvaro Carrillo (1921-1969). Singer José José, in a rare film role, plays the title role convincingly. Carmen Salinas is the tough as nails madam presiding over a famous bordello of the era where Carrillo struggles with the conflicts between family life and the bordello high life. A good cast plus some fine songs (Sabor a mí probably the best known) make for a film sure to please the intended audience. The version viewed is in Spanish only, with no subtitles.

Scream Of Fear (Taste Of Fear) (1961) (1961)
Rated 5/10
A long estranged, invalid daughter is summoned home by her wealthy father, who upon arrival is mysteriously absent. Is the friendly stepmother sincere? The hovering doctor? The handsome chauffeur becomes the daughter's ally in a search for answers. Surprising twists keep the viewer guessing to the satisfying, unexpected end. A somewhat restrained mystery/thriller, more Alfred Hitchcock than Hammer Films.

Wings In The Dark (1935) (1935)
Rated 5/10
Cary Grant is a pilot blinded in an accident. A guide dog and an often behind-the-scenes fellow pilot Myrna Loy help the embittered Grant rebuild and find a new purpose as an inventor. The drama becomes intense when Myrna Loy faces danger on a daring trans-Atlantic flight and needs the help of Grant and his invention to make a safe landing. A predictable drama, more interesting for its portrayal of period aviation.

High School Big Shot (The Young Sinners) (1959) (1959)
Rated 4/10
Marv is the bright, college bound high school student who falls for the wrong girl, the materialistic Betty. Greed is the force leading the characters astray as they plan what appears to be an easy, million dollar robbery, complicated by Betty's thug boyfriend and accomplices. Murder, suicide and long prison terms await. The viewer remains somewhat uninvolved in this so-so teen film noir since the characters are rather unsympathetic.

Thirty Day Princess (1934) (1934)
Rated 5/10
Sylvia Sidney plays an out of work actress who accepts the role of princess to replace her ailing double for a month. She falls in love with the Cary Grant character, but will this love survive when he finds out she has been playing a role? The Depression era audience for this film would have loved the scenes of delicious automat food, flowing wine, lavish gowns, etc. A fine light romantic comedy.

Kiss And Make-Up (1934) (1934)
Rated 5/10
Cary Grant plays a beauty doctor (combination plastic surgeon, cosmetician, dietician, lifestyle advisor) in this light comedy. The bounds of professional ethics are stretched in his encounters with female patients who fall in love with the handsome doctor. Vintage fashion and ideals of beauty are on display in the attractive scenes. Cary Grant even sings charmingly in what sounds like his actual singing voice, a light baritone with a fast vibrato.

Mujeres Infieles (1995) (1995)
Rated 7/10
Three vignettes of unfaithful women from the idle rich echelon of Mexican society. A glossy soap opera style production, with beautiful people, lush scenes, and entertaining stories. Would be rated R for nudity and sexuality.

The Pagan (1929) (1929)
Rated 6/10
The Pagan is referred to as both an early talkie and a late silent film. The mostly instrumental musical sound track is replete with references to The Pagan Love Song, which was a hit record for Novarro at the time. Coordination of the brief vocal excerpts with the motion on screen is poor in comparison to later sound films, but the effects may have been delightful for audiences of the time used to silents. I found the sound fragments tantalizing— more Novarro vocals, please.

Ramón Novarro was at the height of his fame as a Latin lover in The Pagan, and his scantilly clad character is explored by the camera in a surprisingly sensuous way, no doubt adding much to creating the Latin lover image. Dorothy Janis is lovely and, at times, has the look of a star from a much later and more sophisticated film. The plot (presented with intertitles) of The Pagan is thin: mixed race boy and girl fall in love on an island somewhere in the South Pacific, must deal with a stern father figure opposed to their relationship.

The Pagan was a hit in 1929. It remains a watchable memento of a swiftly evolving film industry that would soon leave behind many of the technical aspects on view.
