xiphophilos 3rd Sep 2017		I definitely enjoyed this movie too, and it inspired me to read Eberhard Fechtner's biography of the Harmonists, "Lebensläufe." Most of the songs the Comedian Harmonists sing in this movie are the original recordings, except digitally cleaned up and enhanced. The song "Auf Wiedersehen, My Dear" which they sing to great effect in the movie at their last concert before being banned from any further performance was, if I remember correctly, what they sang at the end of all their concerts. For comparison purposes: In reality, of course, the Comedian Harmonists were banned from performing in Germany, but able to perform and record abroad for another year or so. The plot is, as is usual for these musical bio pics, not true to the letter but a very free adaptation of the facts. One of the comments on that Youtube video is: "Great music but a cheesy and almost entirely fictional script. The dialogue in one scene, concerning quality of German music in the 1920s, was an absolute insult to great Weimar-era composers like Rudolf Nelson, Mischa Spoliansky, Friedrich Hollaender, and Kurt Weill. Clearly, the script writers had no clue about the rich musical scene in Berlin during the 1920s."

The soundtrack came on in French, which confused me greatly since this musical group is German, and the story takes place before and during the Nazi period in Germany. So be sure to change the language to German if you want a more authentic version. English subtitles are also available. The Comedian Harmonists were an immensely popular vocal group in Germany. Telling their somewhat sad story has increased interest in their recordings.Viewers gets a taste of their music in the film.
