zabadak 30th Sep 2019		Rated 10/10 This is the review I wrote on another forum (yes, there are others! :wink: Oh my God, what a film! I'd not even heard of it before (I know, I know) but, after the first few minutes, I knew it was something (completely) different! Shirley (Anne) Feld - I'd not seen her act like that before, why wasn't she a megastar? And Oliver Reed - wow! What presence, the making of a legend! This is like no other Hammer film I can think of. The B&W photography, the desolate Chesil Beach locations (must! visit! Chesil!) , the acting (even the kids!). Viveca Lindfors is so sultry and almost steals the movie at times. I couldn't quite believe the relationship between the two leads (it reminded me of late-period William Holden films where we are forced to believe a vivacious young thing would fall for someone of his age) and there were some creaky moments but they are minor quibbles. George Slv 5th Dec 2015		Review A fascinating science-fiction film that turned out far different from what Hammer studio first envisaged. The basic original story involves English characters like Oliver Reed, who explore this island off England, where they discover that a group of young children are being raised in a radioactive underground environment. They are not harmed by it, and it is planned that after a nuclear war they would emerge and continue the human race. These intruders create dangerous consequences. Joseph Losey, on the run from the US for being a communist, was hired to finish it. Well he does it in his style. Adds a character and brings his Jewish American friend Macdonald Carey to play the major role. More story elements are added involving him, which could be viewed as distracting and extraneous. In the US it was renamed The Damned and shortened. I've never seen that edit available, and would like to. 3 people found this review helpful. ✔︎ Helpful Review?
