I found this in a charity shop earlier this year... one that I'd always meant to get around to watching, so was very pleased to find it.

Absolutely right Greg... ahead of it's time, and yet timeless themes.

It makes you smile when you begin to watch it because of the old silent movie vibe, but petty soon makes any modern audience shift uncomfortably in their seats, as it's almost prophetic, and polemic (Ooh, get me and the words today!).

It's a difficult one to buy though... not because it's hard to find a copy on DVD or Blu-Ray especially, but because there are apparently many versions to chose from.

This is because, this being as old as it is (and as long!) was missing a lot of bits for many years, with some of those pieces considered lost for a while, and the print quality etc. on some releases were un-restored and the like... not to mention a more recent release with a brand new soundtrack by Giorgio Moroder (!).

This is a more complete version, and with a straight silent movie-era organ type score, and the picture is a largely un-restored, but OK-ish (They've kept the black and white graininess you're probably familiar with from other films of the era) - there are others with a more lately added brownish- sepia colourisation I believe.

This DVD is a little more scarce than others, and seems quite a popular one, and so tends to go for a little more sometimes, but not overly so (£10-£15, occasionally £20).

But any version of the film is worth a watch, even if silent movies aren't your thing, or sci-fi for that matter, as it is more social and technological philosophy than anything else (heavy socialist stream running through - robots, workers etc.)
