(should music dvds ever be given an ''artist'' field, this should indeed be entered as 'j. j. cale ...' as this is the most common form of his by-line; but the title is as i originally entered it, and should be corrected back to it.)

ppint. 29th Oct 2019		DVD Smiley's People - BBC (2004)	based on the novel, "smiley's people" by john le carré sequel to the bbc tv series, "tinker, tailor, soldier, spy" (1979, dvd 2003), q.v., based upon the novel of the same title, also written by john le carré. the bbc nor commissioned nor created a dramatised tv series of the second in the original trilogy, " the naïve and honourable schoolboy". ° ° - correctly imnsho judging that it would not make a satisfactory, nor even, perhaps, a comprehensible stand-alone dramatic serial, given the widely- separated in both time and settings of the formative experiences of the two brothers, their childhood with their missionary foster-parents, background not apparently related nor relatable to british imperial interests before or after the second world war, and nor therefore to the circus or to the viewer - until george smiley starts to go through old records and files, back-tracking through old cases in the wreck of the circus left by the mole karla'd placed - and only just uncovered by smiley, searching for aught salvageable - and saleable to the americans, the return of whose co-operation british intelligence so badly required - but which would not be restored without very good reason - intelligence of relevance now, in this day and age - and of great and abiding value.
ppint. 29th Oct 2019		DVD Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy [1979] - BBC (2003)	based on the novel, "tinker, tailor, soldier, spy" by john le carré. the sequel bbc tv series, also on dvd, is "smiley's people" (1982, dvd 2004), q.v. based on the novel of the same title, third in the trilogy, also written by john le carré. the bbc did not commission a dramatisation of the middle novel, correctly judging the lack of any on-screen part by george smiley for nearly all of the story would not make for a coherent dramatic trilogy.
