Don Olsen's Pacific Electric Trilogy - Transit Gloria Mundi (2015)
Volume 1 - The Southern District
Step back into a railfan's paradise - Los Angeles in the 1940s, where the world's largest interurban was scheduling 1,100 passenger trains a day.
From thousands of feet of vintage film, producer-archivist Don Olsen has assembled an extraordinary record of this interurban empire.
Volume 1, first in a trilogy of Pacific Electric videos, features the Southern District, with the Long Beach/San Pedro, Newport Beach, Santa Ana and El Segundo/Torrance Lines.
The evolution of ten and twelve hundred class cars and the "blimps" which supplanted them is well documented.
Separate sections are devoted to carload freight and maintenance-of-way activities, including rail and overhead replacement and wrecks.
As the system's premier freight hauler, electric, steam and diesel powered freights, plus box motors and RPOs kept the rails well polished with wartime activity, and these amazing scenes recall it all with vivid clarity.

Volume 2 - The Western District
PE considered its Western District a "suburban" service.
Although the Burbank, Valley and Venice Short Lines were certainly interurban in character, their equipment generally was not.
Thus this Volume of the Western District focuses on 600 (5050) class cars, which ran on most of the Lines; venerable 800s in rare shots along the Redondo Beach-Del Rey Line; 950s and 1000s, which served the western beaches; and PE's newest cars, the thirty PCCs in the 5000 class.
Also shown are 100s and Birneys in local service.
Our classic coverage of Western District operations features these types of cars, burnishing the rails down to Santa Monica, cresting the Cahuenga Pass or skimming along the Ivanhoe Hills on private right-of-way; plus downtown L.A., with the Subway and Hill Street Terminals, congested Hill Street and its tunnels, and facilities at Toluca yard, West Hollywood and Ocean Park carhouses.
Volume 2 of "Remembering the Red Cars", in the finest quality digital and visual transfer, affords the PE fan an unparalleled opportunity to relive these sights and sounds.

Volume 3 - The Northern District
Justifiably revered as the world's greatest interurban, the Pacific Electric's vast empire has required three video volumes to cover it in detail.
Volume Three features the Northern District, plus Special New Year's Day trains and RPO/Box Motor operations.
The seven lines which provided the District's passenger services (Watts-Sierra Vista, Alhambra-Temple City, two Pasadena Lines, Sierra Madre, Monrovia-Glendora and San Bernardino Lines) are all represented in this mostly color odyssey.
Revisit PE's largest and busiest district and savor the sights and sounds of the big red tens, elevens, twelve hundreds and RPO/boxmotors burnishing over one hundred miles of electrified trackage in the busy decade of the 1940s.

Today's Northwestern Pacific - Pentrex
Take a step back in time as Pentrex pays affectionate tribute to the Northwestern Pacific Railroad.

It's 1992 and the Northwestern Pacific, a Southern Pacific subsidiary, is still running its venerable SD-9s on through trains from Suisun City to Willits in Northern California.

Lumber is still the chief commodity hauled by this historic road, as it's been for years.

Six days a week you can still see NWP trains traveling the 156-mile line.

Much of the traffic originates in Eureka on the newly-formed North Coast Railroad (formerly the Eureka Southern).

The NWP interchanges with the North Coast in Willits and forwards those trains to the Southern Pacific (Now Union Pacific as of 1996) at Suisun City.

NWP diesels were leased by the North Coast Railroad during its first months, recreating the days when the NWP still owned the line to Eureka.

You'll be treated to a brief look at the operations of the North Coast Railroad and the Eureka Southern, as well as an up-close and personal tour of the Northwestern Pacific.

Petaluma is NWP's base of operations.

Sprint trains and their crews originate here, running both north and south on the line.

Normally the north end of the line is only run at night but in 1992 NWP ran Willits-to-Petaluma trains during daylight hours, providing us with a rare opportunity to capture this scenic route.

Three years of filming throughout the changing seasons resulted in the original release of this show in 1993 as a VHS video.

Now it is available on DVD, delivering these fascinating images with the enhanced viewing quality that DVD provides.

For the knowledge that these DVDs have, it's exciting to see steam engines working.

I purchased these DVDs for the history of Southern Pacific in modeling my HO SP trains.

I found out that Cab Forward steam locomotives pulled passenger trains over the "HILL."

I hope to model these at my model railroad club.

Review
Relive the enchantment of the Silver Lady

Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2009

This is a professionally produced, fair-minded, and vividly photographed recollection of what many believe to be America's greatest passenger train, the California Zephyr (CZ), which operated between Chicago, IL and Oakland, CA from 1949 until 1969. A product of postwar collaboration among three railroads (the Burlington, Rio Grande, and Western Pacific), the CZ featured what many aficionados consider to be the most beautiful passenger railroad equipment ever built, gleaming in its stainless steel exterior and incomparably luxurious inside. The CZ's standard equipment included five dome cars, which enabled passengers to see the beautiful scenery (and the train itself, snaking ahead and trailing behind). Railfans will savor the brief, but rewarding shots of CZ consists and locomotives that aren't available in other videos, but this is a video that can be enjoyed by anyone -- it includes touching interviews with former Zephyrettes, a CZ diner steward, and the CEO of the WP, who was quite obviously still dealing with guilt for his role in putting the Silver Lady to death. To its credit, the film doesn't wallow in nostalgia -- it just tells the story, and does so even-handedly, without strident posturing or pointing fingers of blame. If you're in love with trains and would like to give a DVD to family and friends to explain why, this is it.

Ellery Queen Mysteriesn - NBC Universal (2010)
Review
Storyline
The third television adaptation of the adventures of super sleuth Ellery Queen, this time set during the 1940s. Queen (Jim Hutton) was a mystery writer who assisted his father, Inspector Richard Queen (David Wayne), who was with the New York Police Department, in solving murders. Sergeant Thomas Velie (Tom Reese) was Inspector Queen's assistant and Simon Brimmer (John Hillerman), a rival detective. Queen's methods were arcane and intellectual rather than action oriented, and he always astounded his father by arriving at a correct solution by purely deductive reasoning. In this version, just before he revealed his solution to the crime, Queen always turned to the camera and asked the television audience if they had figured out the identity of the killer yet, they had all the clues, because he was about to reveal the correct killer as we met the entire slew of suspects in one room for the ending.

Electric Rails Around The Bay - Charles Smiley Presents (2003)
Review
Editorial Reviews
Three electric lines in one video: The Sacramento Northern, SP Red Trains and the Peninsular Railway. See SP ferry boats on the San Francisco Bay and the SN's ferryboat that linked the south-end to the north-end - carrying entire trains, both passenger and freight, from Chips to Mallard.

You'll also see Sacramento Northern freight trains and the interchange with the electric Oakland terminal line at 40th & Shafter yard. The scenes in Oakland, Berkeley and the Oakland Hills plus Sacramento Northern lines out to Contra Costa County are the essential Eastbay of a by-gone era.

Follow several freights through the Oaklnad Hills, Montclair, the long tunnel and through Redwood Canyon to Moraga. From there we run out to Walnut Creek, Concord and the "subway" crossing under Santa Fe and SP tracks. This 1910 to 1957 history is a favorite of railfans and rail historians.

The reviews are in and the press loves this DVD. Railfan & Railroad says, "The 16mm film used in this program was shot by almost 20 photographers and ranges from very good to excellent. This is another excellent and highly educational program from this producer." And Model Railroad News had this to say, "He takes old 8 and 16mm film and spins it into gold... If you're not already a traction fan, this video may push you over the edge!"
