Notes

Outdoor benefit for unemployed musicians in Musicians Union Local 802, organized by WNEW's Martin Block and presenting 21 swing orchestras. Attended by 23,400 swing music fans, this is considered to be the first outdoor jazz music festival ever.

Parts of the concerts were broadcasted live by New York radio station WNEW. Much of the rest seems to have been recorded by sound engineer Bill Savory onto 12- or even 16-inch discs at 33 1/3 rpm, including Benny Goodman on clarinet in a duet with Teddy Wilson on harpsichord playing “Oh, Lady Be Good!"; Billie Holiday, accompanied by piano, singing a rubato version of “Strange Fruit;” and performances by Count Basie and Stuff Smith.

In 2010, Savory's estate gave these transcriptions to the National Jazz Museum of Harlem, which restored and digitized them. In 2018, they were released as part of The Savory Collection Mosaic CD set (review).
