Various Artists - Into Each Life / It Don't Mean A Thing
As enjoyable as these are today, they are hard to find. Not only because they were shipped to the Armed Forces in bulk to get to military anywhere there was a front line or training base, but there was a thorough stripe of race division. All of these featured artists on 365a are African American, despite their popularity and differences. It's more common to find pairings of, say, Harry James and Benny Goodman on two sides- one apiece, Woody Herman and the Andrews Sisters, Frankie Carle & Buddy Clark. I do have a Duke Ellington with Hal McIntyre on the flip - Duke does "mood Music" and Hal had the Swing but no vocals (other than some brilliant Duke scatting), but that's fairly rare. Duke had a few, Count Basie and Fats Waller, King Cole was new and hot later on. All Star Orchestra was a way to include any mix of top musicians.
I had a relative in service who loved new music and he'd get so pissed (50 years later)because he'd find certain records had been destroyed or not taken care of. Music broke a lot of barriers in American society, but you couldn't always count on your fellow man in a barracks to save you a 'race record'.
Of course, they were never meant to be sold or even owned by individuals, so kudos to those who managed to get a 12" vinyl record home. The FBI confiscated a library of 2500 from someone involved in the program who worked at a record plant.
At day's end, these recordings were often personalized with gratitude to the soldiers, were sometimes goofs of recordings released in different form and might be the only recording of some songs due to the recording ban. Now, if you can find them in good shape, they are a joy if you use the right needle.
