MeiMei 20th Jul 2017 | | Live MusicTom Petty And The Heartbreakers @ Cardiff University | The gig when Tom Petty realised he was going to be a pop star (according to Runnin' Down a Dream Bogdanovich doc) Petty couldn't get headline tour in US. Supported Nils Lofgren in Cardiff in May. Myself & Stuart Kellling went to see, free tickets because we let other promoters into JSU gigs free. Didn't stay for Nils persuaded Dave Scott to book Petty as headliner at JSU. Petty put together a tour around that, played a couple of gigs before Cardiff but not great. But then night before Cardiff on TOTP for first time and stormed it. Suddenly we couldn't sell enough tickets. Sold 800 over fire limit. Helped hump band into JSU had chat with Tom who was in laid back mode. Massive lively crowd. Unheard of support band called Boomtown Rats energised audience Petty then came on & played storming set. As they say in doc that was night they knew they would make it. Postscript saw Petty earlier this month in Hyde Park - he played everything Won't Back Down, Freefallin, Running Down a Dream, Refugee, teased us with dreadful first encore and then burst into American Girl which we watched with Jayne who we bumped into by pure chance who was also there with me on Friday 17 June 1977 for one of the best gigs of all time (apart from the Clash who I'd first seen three weeks earlier of course)
