Collection 4

I'm a passionate collector of 78rpm 10" shellac records of Jazz and bluesmusic from 1920,30,40,50 and also collect Gramophones of HMV and gramophone needle tins. Also the recordlabels fascinates me and the history behind. I have 78rpm 10" shellacrecords that I bought for the music but I have also shellacrecords that I bought for the recorlabels. Myself I have an HMV 102 blue one with recordtray and play everyday these lovely records which I'm going to put on this site day by day.

Victor was the dominant figure in the record and phonograph market in the early 1900s. Victor was started by Eldridge R. Johnson, a machinist from Camden, NJ. His first records came out in 1900. There were a couple types before any you see here.

This label is considered a "Pre-Dog" label as it lacks the famous Nipper logo yet to be used. It is a 10" record that was called the Victor Monarch Record where the "lease agreement" is on top half of the label. By October 1901 Eldridge R. Johnson incorporated as the Victor Talking Machine Company and replaced his name as the manufacturer.

Garde Republicaine - Scottisch du Carillon / Scottisch des Cloches
In September 1911, Aérophone discs were imported from Paris, and sold from premises at 50 High Holborn, London. Apparently both vertical and lateral cut discs were made. I don't know what cut this one has. Perhaps both? Neither is it known for how long they were available. What is certain, is that not many can have been sold – they are very scarce.

British Actuelle discs duly came out in September 1921, with ‘Needle Cut’ on the label – disque aiguille. They had several catalogue series. The normal ‘popular’ series above began at 10101, and continued out of our time period, until December 1928, over 1,400 issues having been made by then.

The one above is 10.5″ and is lateral cut. Neither is it known for how long they were available. What is certain, is that not many can have been sold – they are very scarce.
