SteveE 16th Jan 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Fuzz, Flaykes, & Shakes Vols. 1 | The name of the group, The Soultans, is a misspelling on 2001s Bacchus Archives' Fuzz, Flaykes & Shakes Vol. 4: Experiment In Color. The correct spelling is The Soultons. The 2019 Particles' Fuzz, Flaykes & Shakes Vols. 1 - 7 box set has copied the original seven CD covers, still showing the misspelled name (Soultans). The booklet included in the Particles box set has corrected the name. The notes for The Soultons in the new booklet, are good except for the statement that “Rain Down Soul” (1968), was The Soultons only single. They recorded a second single in 1970, “Cloud Nine / Proud Mary” on Jaguar Records (San Jose). The photo of the band is a later photo, not one of the band of 1968. It is the band in 1970, with the horn players and after vocalist Bob Watkins had left the band. See biography on The Soultans Discography page for more information on The Soultons.
If you have had trouble collecting all seven volumes of Tony The Tyger Presents, Fuzz, Flaykes & Shakes, (1999-2002) from Bacchus Archives, this new box set from Particles of the seven volumes will hold you over until you find the originals. It’s great to have all seven volumes of the Fuzz, Flaykes & Shakes collection in one new box set. All those bands, most of them forgotten, deserve to be heard. So much time and effort was put into each of those songs. The booklet included in the new set has much more information than the notes with the original CDs.
