It is interesting that Ebay has been able to get away with allowing sellers to make the most outlandish (e.g., "rare!!!!") or even clearly wrong claims about their products. Traditional auction houses like Christie's or Sotheby's would have an expert appraiser actually handle the object and try to accurately describe it because the auction house would get in trouble were they to sell fakes. Maybe it's time that Ebay is held to similar standards. Although then the knowledgeable collector will also no longer be able to profit from an ignorant seller's complete mislabeling of their items. Moreover, I really don't know how Ebay is supposed to guarantee an item's authenticity without actually having someone personally check out the item.

BTW, as much as it seems appropriate to illustrate a discussion about fakes with fake Latin, it's actually "caveat emptor" (let the buyer beware!).
