You're not doing anything wrong. When images are taken with smartphones, they are often rotated 90 degrees. This image is actually saved sideways, and the image contains data that says "I need to be rotated". When the image is uploaded, our server notes this and rotates the image. No problems.

The problem arises when you manually rotate the image, but your image software doesn't update the image to say that it has been rotated. So when you upload it, the image still contains the data that says "I need to be rotated".

How to solve this? There is no way unfortunately. If we ignore the "I need to be rotated" marker then most images uploaded from smartphone would be wrong. If we keep the current method, then we have problems with broken image software that does not update the marker.

Possible compromises:
-ignore the rotation marker for edited images, so that you can edit your image if it appears sideways
-provide moderators with a "quick rotate" option

This is on our "investigate and fix" list. It will be solved, eventually.
