Whilst browsing around the internet I stumbled upon this website The Vitaphone Project, which aims to reunite 'lost' soundtracks to early films.
The website is not any great shakes to navigate, but they are working with UCLA and some film companies in their project and have successfully managed to resurrect a couple dozen films which would otherwise have remained gathering dust in archives.
Apparently there are thousands of short films that have jazz scores on separate discs, (sound & visuals were synchronised by the cinema projection team), but when the films fell out of circulation the sound discs typically got bought by collectors.

It looks like the Vitaphone Project is mainly interested in information, to keep a notes on who owns copies of the valuable soundtracks so that when the film elements are located then they can call upon people for borrowing the soundtrack to complete the restorations.

All the info is up on their website, they also sell CDs and DVDs of restored work, have a read to find out more info.
