Ridiculous is the right word. At least for 78s, it would be far less misleading to display the auction price for VG and then to also mark it _prominently_ as an "Auction Price" rather than "Value".

Almost all of the records that I own myself and that I see here marked as $20-40 or even in the $100s, I bought within the last 7 years at garage sales and on estate sales for $.50, sometimes for less. Had they been offered to me for even $5, I would not have taken them because I know it's only a matter of time before I find them somewhere else for far less. After all, the kind of music I like was _very popular_ back in the day, and most auction sites wouldn't even accept these records because they are still so common.

Fortunately, there haven't been too many occasions where I simply had to walk away because people had looked at similarly inflated Ebay prices and thought they owned incredible treasures (like the South Pacific album!). I also admit that I don't feel any need to be a completist collector.

To be fair, I am also aware that I would nowadays be much more likely to see many of the kind of records Mike Gann collects on an auction site than at a garage sale.
