At first I thought this was a weird error, but I'm seeing it enough now that it appears not to be. That's when you have a Pocket Books paperback from the 1970s and it says "2nd printing" on the copyright page and gives month and year - and that date is earlier than the date given for the FIRST printing. An example (which I will upload shortly) is Richard Brautigan's The Hawkline Monster. 2nd printing is dated August 1976, yet right above it says Pocket Book edition published October 1976. This was also frequently the case with a series of books I recently indexed by Paul Kenyon called The Baroness (The Ecstasy Connection, Sonic Slave, etc); the second printing is dated before the first.

Any idea why this was the case? Was this because they ordered a 2nd print run in advance of releasing the book, in anticipation of strong sales? I have no idea if any other publishers did this, and I have not noticed this with Pocket Books releases from the 60s and 80s (and onwards) that I've indexed, so it appears to have been temporary, whatever it was.
