scrough - indeed come 1940 its some kind of surprise that Decca and EMI ( so far as I am aware the only TWO companies making 10in 78s by then - were Rex still independent and I wont count the discount things Woolworths and similar might be stocking), were producing ANYTHING. Dunkirk was being evacuated, Dieppe had been a disaster too , and all the kids were being evacuated back and forth out of London only to find themselves STILL facing bomb drops in Essex or Kent, though Devon and Dorset a little safer.
When I did an analysis of what had come to me from Mum's / Dad's /Aunties' collections (basically enough to fit in a cabinet under a Pye Black Box or Wind Up Player in width) I was surprised that there were a few really old (pre-1923) ones, and the majority post-1947, presumably sold cheap as 45s were starting to kick in. The same kind of proportions occur in the job lots from bins or antique shops that I have gained over the years. Mum's house, although never getting a direct hit, got enough bombs near it to blow the windows out, dislodge roof tiles, cause general damage down the chimney and kill the cat - and I can still name, if I see the 1939 voters list, the parents and children killed one way and another due to hits in the street, from machine guns, V1s and V2s. Family photos, jewellery, books and domestic china were all lost (including looted while away in the West Country), during the period too. And we were in the relatively quiet bit of London - mainly hit as bombers were dropping anything left en route from targets missed due to bad weather or whatever. Dont forget Al Bowlly (And Chick Henderson) were killed during air-raids, and similar took out other entertainment venues. Mum was packing light bulbs in a former flea-pit cinema for work (by 1943), under a leaking roof where the water was sort of contained by tarpaulins as a kind of internal tent and drainage system. After the war one of her roles was to be in charge of the Friday afternoon half hour of playing workers' records they had brought in as a change from the radio program normally played over the tannoy system.
