sounds like a broken record

I have pulled several cracked, smashed or busted discs out of my box of dusty historical sounds. Is there a guaranteed method of extracting a circular piece out of the jagged edges and saving the label?

A very good quality hole saw, some trial and error, a gentle hand, and patience.
And then some very fine grade emery to smooth the edges off.
I should add... I haven't actually tried. Edited by nboldock on 28th Aug 2013, 8:30 PM

There's a guy somewhere who does this to make and sell '78 label' drinks coasters

Rumor has it that once you upload 100 label scans, moderator status is automatically granted...

Nope, there's the whole midnight/woods/sacrifice thing to go through first.

Well, that lets me out of the race to be moderator!(an unenviable job at the best of times, I'd imagine!)

You MIGHT try getting a flat metal ring just beyond the size of a label, heating it up via blow torch, maybe, or an oven, then carefully placing it on the record and then putting heat-resistant weights on top of it to allow it to cut through the vinyl.
I've never tried it, either! Good luck!

Wouldn't work with shellac though...
I think I'd start with an angle grinder and finish with a template or jig against a bench grinder. I may try it someday, but not today

How about using the same metal ring as before, but put LOTS of pressure on it while it's on the record, then just lift up the outer edges. Theoretically, the record SHOULD snap off right where the ring is and leave a nearly perfect circle!

In shellac that would cause cracks which would propagate in an uncontrolled manner. Wouldn't work with glass either...

I don't know! I've seen it work with other hard things!
Try using a glass cutter on it, then.
