Another example
How do we deal with Series or sublabels? I might have been too quick using "Vogue" here? "Mode Serie"?

I was going to mention this in the context of Phonogram issues from the 70s.

A lot of them (Philips, Polydor, Vertigo, Blue Horizon) have 'secondary' designations, e.g. 'Polydor Select' or 'Vertigo Deluxe', but which only appear on the sleeve rather than the label.

Can we agree that these should just be under, say 'Polydor' or 'Vertigo' and - if deemed desirable - put any such secondary category (which were probably price-range-related) in Notes?

Makes sense to me.

Go with the main label and have in the notes the secondary details (sub label) as necessary.

I've just become aware of an issue here - albums issued by "Various Artists". There are currently hundreds, but there will eventually be thousands - probably tens of thousands, all in the same category. I think they will need some sort of system - label, genre, series, whatever. Guinness Book of British Hit Albums sorts them by label, but they have a relatively small sample (those which charted) so that may or may not be the best way to go.

Maybe not Genres then. Lists is a good idea, but I still wonder if labels will need breaking up. Think Virgin for instance. There must have been 50 vinyl albums in the "Now" series, and several more, like "Now Christmas". Should these be a separate entity somehow?

Yes, I always hope to see something meaningful if I click on links from a release. The individual 'artists' links will be good, but sorting of labels is only in the early stages, even on 45cat
Of course we may be able to use 'linked releases' in some cases - for example HA.8129

by coincidence I was just about to ask if it was possible to Link together "Memories Are Made Of Hits" so if you do search they show up together? I have a couple of these albums lurking somewhere on the shelves.

(the trojan series Tighten Up - will be another example of a VA album linked by title? )

List I would think are the way forward.
The thoughts behind linking releases as you know was to show the same item being released like for like under different Cat#s, labels, countries etc. such as this album.
It works with what you've done there JJ but it could go awry if these same albums were issued at a later date in another country or reissued with changes to labels/cat #s.

The example you linked to is a series of records and should be implemented using a list. "Linked Releases" are for alternative releases of the same record. The problem is perhaps the term "linked releases", it's a bit ambiguous.

Is it possible to change it, to "Alternative editions" or "other pressings" or something?

One of your local breweries just won Roger Protz' nomination for World's best Beer. You're forgiven!
