I don't know whether this has already been discussed, but it might be an idea to get this sorted before thousands of post's have to be re-edited.With regards to the correct way of listing soundtracks, would it not be a good idea to have the following drop down menu for options:Soundtrack/Film,Soundtrack/Television,Soundtrack/Stage/Show,Soundtrack/Radio?,and to have the film/television/show/stage/radio title as the main search ,not the artist?.After all, most people will know the film title, but they may not know the artist?.
I think it's an excellent idea. I think a Soundtracks category is needed, and it should be further sub-divided like you say. These categories would be used in place of artist names when uploading an LP. These sub-categories, incidentally, are from my definitive UK charts book, which splits them this way:
Soundtracks - films
Soundtracks - radio
Soundtracks - stage cast
Soundtracks - studio cast
Soundtracks - television
I also think this sub-division of categories will happen with various artists at some stage, but that's another issue for another time!

I do think some kind of system for identifying soundtracks would be useful, though what that system should be is anybody's guess. The suggestions above are good starting points for discussion.
Of course the list function is another possibility.
Let's have some more feedback - in particular OC would need to have some input as any coding work would be down to him of course.
A very good idea.
I think as said above, that most of the time people will search for the film, the show or the radio play.
Record Collector has divided it in
Original Stage show
Radio casts.
Tv & film soundtrack. (maybe in two parts)
Something to work with OC.
I think the category "Soundtrack - studio cast" is useful. For example, how many labels issued music from "Hair"? They aren't stage cast recordings, and obviously aren't film, TV etc, so it fills a useful gap.
I don't think any special programming is needed. What I think would be useful would be that these categories serve in the same way as artist names, so the album is "by" Soundtrack, rather than Various Artists or similar. I think all we need to do is agree a good way, someone start it off, and then maybe put it in the guidance notes for others to follow suit. Once the name is established, it will become a prompt for anyone adding a soundtrack, and they will be able to select the appropriate ones from the auto-suggestions which pop up as they type.
