Don't know if this has been raised before, but I have a 6LP box set coming soon. Is it preferable to list the LPs individually, as well as listing them within the box set? In this case, the LPs weren't available individually, just within the box - but I've seen other cases (Beatles Box for example) where the individual LPs are listed too.

We haven't got an official policy - but I think we need one.
Personally I like to see a boxset all listed on the same page as that's the way they were packaged/sold. I think it looks odd when boxset contents are listed separately when they were not sold that way.
That said, there is the issue that of course box sets can get split up over the years, and I'm sure we've all seen orphaned LPs (long separated from their original boxset home) in charity shops and the like, but do they need to be listed individually? I'm not sure. At the moment we have both arrangements on the site which is obviously not consistent.
If you own an LP but not the rest of the box, you can still click I Own on the box and add a note on your Collection page that you only have part of it.

Yeah i agree if they were never released as separate LPs then they shouldn't have their own listing. I think this rule will also help clean up soime of the discographies, as TopPopper said the beatles box set has been technically put in twice as a box set and then again separately, theres no need to add more to a discography than neccessary.
oh and as a nother point on tidier discographies is there anywayt that box sets dont show their track listing on the main artist page maybe only viewable if you open the record's separate page
if topppopers 6LP gets added it'll take up an entire page to itself !!

I wonder if it would be possible from an IT point of view to only list, say, the first twelve songs, whatever the format, maybe with a symbol like [...] if there are more?

yeah i think the long lps and Double lps are a bit too long winded. I think it would be better to have a shorter displaying method.
A similar question, but not the same one. You asked how to add a box set - I want to know whether I should also add individual LPs. I know how to do it.
The whole set, by the way, will have a list of 90 songs.
Also, 26 scans - hope no-one finds an alternative edition, or that could become 52!
I wonder if we really ought to do what was done with the Beatles Box, and detail the LPs individually, with a separate page for the box itself, linking across to each LP?

Well, I'm going to load the box set up, probably today. I'm still not sure what to do, but I think I will go for separate LPs entries - unless there is a serious objection. I just think it's undesirable to have a 90-track listing in one place.
Maybe a general policy could be devised? Say double and triple LPs = one entry, more that that = individual LPs?

Fully agree, this is on the TODO list, something that needs to be fixed before Vinyl Albums can be moved out of beta test mode.
