In Classical, barcodes are not indexed as "All." They must be searched as "Barcodes." Please add Barcodes to the All index.
Multiple barcodes are available for many albums (I've had as many as 3 on a single album), but the field is not repeatable. I've been adding additional barcodes to comments, but perhaps the data field should be made repeatable.
Barcodes with the letter "D" prefix are common in the U.S., but the system will not accept barcodes with letters. Again, I add these barcodes to comments, but perhaps the system should accept alpha-numeric barcodes. (I'm not sure if alpha-numeric bar-codes are used in other countries, etc.). When adding Missing Information, these D prefix barcodes can be scanned into the barcode field, but I think the "D" disappears when the record finishes change.
Long barcodes seem to be truncated by the system. After 14 or so digits, the number seems to be truncated. I haven't kept track of the few I've noticed; again, I add the barcode variation to a Comment.
A few barcodes scan slightly differently than what is shown in the printed code, often one extra digit at the end of the barcode. I add the variation to a Comment.
I scan many barcodes for both searching and input, and they are great for these purposes. But they present these issues as well.
Some system testing may be needed to check some of these issues. I don't want to play around with "real" records I'm inputting in order to troubleshoot.

That's very esoteric knowledge JE; I only know what little I've been able to absorb from Wikipedia, but it seems there must be two or more numbering systems commonly in use on CDs, though presumably the use of the codes means they must remain readable by the retailer for stock control purposes.
Most of my coded CDs seem to have 12 digit codes which I presume is the UPC, and a few have 13, which I presume is the EAN, but the Global Trade Item Number can have 12, 13 or 14. These all seem to use only numerals.
Your Sony Classical entries look anomalous and as you add more variations Orbiting Cat may have to modify the barcode field, in accordance with your advice.

Thanks for the detailed feedback!
-For classical music, barcodes are now searched by default, and are now displayed when viewing discographies.
-We're going to stay with a single barcode per item, as this is by far the most common situation. If a barcode has variations, then they can be added as a note or comment.
-Only numeric barcodes can be entered, as this stops confusion with catalogue numbers. Barcodes are supposed to be numberic I believe, so the "D" can be omitted when being added. You can't submit an item with a non-numeric item. When using the "Add Missing Info" feature, any non-numeric characters are removed.
-14 digits seems to cover most barcode schemes in use for CD products. If you can show me the item that has a longer barcode, then I can investigate further.
