The last of these threads, unless someone knows of another format that UK #1 singles were available on (or UK singles in general, for that matter...).
What was the first UK #1 hit available as a 12"?
I reckon: Blondie - Heart Of Glass in February 1979
According to a listing made by a friend, the last one was DJ Fresh* Feat. Rita Ora – Hot Right Now in February 2012
I'd have thought more would be on that format now, given that the most popular genres are best suited to it. Or maybe that's how little I know, as I haven't followed the charts for years
And before that ....
The Floaters with "Float On" (#1 for 1 week in August 1977) was available on a 12" ... indeed, I still have mine!! The full length version of the song weighed in at over 11 minutes so it wasn't very suitable for a 7" single.
I'm inclined to believe that The Floaters release was the first UK #1 that was made available on 12".
Interesting, TMG. We do currently have a "UK" 12-inch of Three Times A Lady from 1978 on the site, but I'm certain it's not actually a UK release (as you are no doubt aware of the correct cat number sequences - TMG).
Are you researching this for some reason, or just idle curiosity? Some lists on the site would be great, but quite a bit of work involved.
Idle curiosity; I've been interested in UK chart toppers for years. They seem to be a good marker of the popularity of different formats.
I did start doing the UK #1s as lists on 45cat. But as you say, quite a bit of work.
Thanks for the info, great to know there were earlier 12" #1s. Funny that Boney M didn't take advantage of the extended playing time! That 1977 one is a lot of floating! Maybe the longest chart topper, at least until Frankie Goes to Hollywood... (Yes, I know the shorter 7" was the 'main' format though.)

I must say I have found these posts really fascinating! I love the fact that we don't actually know for sure what the answers are right away and then WHAM, someone comes in with a brilliant fact, thereby contributing to our overall knowledge!
