What's the prevailing wisdom abut Golden Guinea amongst the members. Is it a crap record label or better than average among re-issue budget labels?

Being a Radio Luxembourg fan, I have a copy of

The Best Of Radio Luxembourg

various-the-best-of-radio-luxembourg-ab-t.jpg

And found it to be a pretty good collection

I also just got a copy of Kent Walton presents Honey Hit Parade (GGL 0129) which I'll scan soon, and it too is rather nice

Any thoughts -- are these 208 related LPs the best of the bunch on Golden Guinea

They can mostly be described as 'populist' but of course there were other desirable collections, like Rhythm And Blues GGL.0280. In Classical there were re-releases of major orchestras, like The London Philharmonic Orchestra

Just added scan for Ken Walton presents Honey Hit Parade ....

various-artists-kent-walton-presents-honey-hit-parade-ab-t.jpg

but the real bonus here is the price reduction inner sleeve, which I've also added to the sleeves world

golden-guinea-qpt-t.jpg

I have to wonder how many of these came out, if any, at the OT rather than ZT tax structure as the cover shows a price of 21/- for OT, but the inner sleeve and record itself show it would have been sold as ZT at 19/11.

I have to agree strongly with Jules - a lot of middle of the road, but also some real gems - including Alan Lomax's "Murders Home" and the Muddy Waters/Howlin Wolf/etc. live session.

I think it's an above average budget label, of course most labels have good and not so good, but with artists such as Lonnie Donegan, Fats Domino and Muddy Waters plus, a bit of comedy from Tony Hancock, you can't really go wrong, can you?

Basically Pye selling down the demand curve, competing with original artists against soundalike LPs, sold in differing retail outlets. After all once the music is on tape, studio fees dont apply so prices can be dropped.

Presumably these were originally retailed at 21bob

iiuc, some superb golden guinea lps were the first uk (& eu, commonwealth excluding canadada, etc, as appropriate) releases of the albums, and not "mid-price budget label reissues": but although lps released on the golden guinea label cost only the same as two-to-three singles, more-or-less, they didn't compete in our minds the way you might now expect them to've: money was an awful lot tighter then, than it has been for most teenagers and young adults, most of the time since the late sixties through the sainted same hilda margaret's & john mini-minor major's recessions, and since then through this latest diddy david "porkypieminister" cameron's & tessa "deranged dalek" nay's deliberately-chosen depression; only one or two of yr hmbl srppnt.'s friends could regularly buy a single a week, every week - lots, like me°, couldn't even afford two a month, not for certain. . .

° - that was why discovering the world of record corpses' deletions seemed like heaven
