I was curious how I can find out the year a record was released on the Esquire label. I know that the recording date is at the 6 o'clock position on the label...but when was the record pressed? For example, this Dizzy Gillespie record was recorded in 1946, but according to Redpunk (who I would trust!), it was released in 1949. Thanks

The recording was originally released on the US label Dial which is listed on this site as being in 1946.
For the record I hunted around a bit on t'net and it seems that that the Esquire label was founded by Carlo Krahmer and Peter Newbrook late 1947. So maybe (only maybe) 1948 might be a closer release year given this record is a fairly low number in the labels releases.

@sladesounds,
As you pointed out on one of the Esquire issues, the label wasn't founded until '47 and yet we had one listed as '45 and another as '46. The cat#s suggested '50 or '51 for the first one and '51 or '52 for the other. I've removed the dates from both of them until we have more solid info.
To some extent with 78s we were going on Recording Dates as much as release dates. As better info comes to light Release Date entry may well be better.
I've now actually added as many release dates to the Esquire records in our database as can be deducted from the catalog numbers and info on the following sites:
