What is the preferred method of recording 78 boxed sets. I see some people add them all as a single entry which leaves the catalogue numbers inconsistent, whereas others list each record separately. I have a number of large boxed sets to enter and would like to get it right from the start.

If I understand correctly, most 78s were sold separtely in their heyday and owners would build their own collection of songs in album books. After the debut of the 45, labels began marketing 78 collections or albums similar to the 7" EP. In many cases, the discs in these albums were sold separately and only combined into the album book or set if the customer wished to purchase it as a whole. Keep in mind that records back then were not sealed. Folks could sample a record in the store and build-your-own album of several 78s with ease. This was common place until the EP and eventually LP became the predominate form of an album.

I believe this is why it is recommended to enter 78 discs separately and as a set if marketed with other discs in an album or set.

Some 78s were sold as a collection, in a book-like binder, as you might find stamps (for example), hence the term "album", which we still use today

e.g. rimsky-korsakov's scheherezade on hmv 78s was sold as a boxed set - and it was quite a substantial box, too. it had to be. . . :-)

Yes I'd like to see 78 albums listed as albums instead of individual discs. They don't belong as individuals and it's inaccurate archiving.

Not many remain in the albums and very often the album has a disc or two missing or when you open it up the original discs have gone replaced by Mr. Formby etc.
So the best method is the one the site uses which is to add the discs as they are found and if someone finds an album empty or full then to link the individual discs to the album.

I have a lot of 'broken sets' where I only have one record of the album. I also have some where I have the album package but less than a full set of disks. I have held off on entering these because of some 'perfectionist' guilt inside of me, until now. I now feel it is better to add the disk so that they do get archived and then later when all show up try to unify the lot.

Complete box sets may not be available. Best to enter what you have. Building a perfect web site in the 78rpm section is impossible. At least if you enter what you have, we have some record (pun not intended) of it. I wish that all the entries would have images, but I am Ok without them. I have entered an album where I did not have any of the records, just the album cover.

Edited to add:
Sorry, I was responding to Jock Girl

BRE 123 -The preferred method is to enter them as box sets if possible.
