(theoretically) possibly c. 30th century bce° shortly after the invention of the kick-flywheel-stabilised potter's wheel was joined in the potter's shop by the use of a reed or light wooden stylus being rested upon a guiding edge, with which to incise a linear groove (sometimes in a zig-zag pattern) into the surface of the unfired pot. . . °°

°° - and the potter and/or one or more customers were engaged in a sufficiently high-volume discourse, dispute or song as to what label to release the pot under. . .

Are we talking about physical shellac or vinyl? I'm sure I have an MP3 from an 1850s French recording of Claire de Lune. It was made with smoke on paper.
