Back in the day, I was into the singer songwriter genre. I had two Nick Drake albums on pre-recorded cassettes. I thought at that time that he was no better than ordinary and my view hasn't changed much. The tapes went (regrettably) to the recycling centre about 4-5 years ago along with about 1200 others some of which were copied from vinyl .

I agree, Kab. I've got his three albums but I think they're pleasant without being great. I don't really understand why he's so revered. "Chime of the City Clock" is a great song though.

I think it's all in the ear of the beholder. Personally I could never understand how Bruce Springsprung ever made it, a total non-entity as far as I'm concerned. Has a voice like cement mixer that needs new bearings.

He was perennially stylish and always looked great. There don't seem to be any embarrassing photos of him.His appearance is frozen in the early seventies without him ever looking like a tit.He never wore stupid clothes like cheesecloth shirts, granny vests or loons, and he had great hair.
I quite like his music. His lyrics are hard to fathom but I suspect he was a humourist and was having us on a lot of the time.He had a particular impact on the humourless rock historian Ian McDonald who was persuaded to believe that the woman in River Man was called Betty because the song was about a wager.

For me his genius was in the understatedness of his songs, he seemed to be almost embarrased at his own talent. I have all his albums and listen to them frequently, I'm also never done hearing his music played in the background of many TV shows. A particular song that gets used quite a lot is "Road" from the album Pink Moon

There was a long stretch when his albums were unavailable - hard to believe given his current reputation - but it probably elevated his status. I was certainly well pleased at getting hold of a secondhand fruit tree reissue box set around 1990.

Drake was inducted yesterday into the Folk Awards Hall Of Fame in Belfast's Waterfront Hall.

Hear also the Radio 2 documentary. The link explains his recent rise to celebrity.
