I have two printer scanners both Epson. The WF 7515 gives the effect you mention. If I scan using my PX 720WD @ 1200 DPI with backlight correction on, it gets rid of the problem

Thanks for that, I''ll give it a go. Mine's an Epson too. model V370 photo
Not a problem, The only difference I can think of between my two printer scanners is that the PX 720 WD is a photo printer and probably designed to work better at higher resolutions. I had been using my WF 7515 since joing 45 worlds and I have recently been renewing all my disc scans using the PX 720 WD.

I'm beginning to think that my scanner isn't up to it. I need to change the scanner bed glass too as it's getting pretty scratched. I'll PM you shortly but there's no rush to reply. Thanks for the help

I was looking at the specs for your scanner and if anything they were reading better than mine

Thanks for all the replies fellas.
I've have indeed resorted to a digital camera and light box (for mainly silver discs only, coloured ones are fine) but I definitely need a new scanner so when I've got some pennies it's an A3 for me.
6000 cd's to add!

The Epson WF 7515 I mentioned earlier that gave the rainbow effect is an A3+ scanner printer. Be wary and try to get demos if possible

For me, the effect 'just happens' and I've not yet tried to overcome it
Photographing is not the answer
Jules, that's not strictly true. It depends on your knowledge of photography.
I've uploaded these 5 images so you can see. The first 4 are scans and the fifth is a digital camera pic, done as a test and without any diffused lighting (which when added will lighten the image)
As you can see, the problem is only with mainly silver discs

Sure, only the shiny silver discs do this (edited your link)
I'll try the suggestions next time I fire up the scanner
I thought there was something wrong with that link but couldn't figure out what!
I used the 'insert image' tab. should it have been 'insert webpage link'? Doh!
I'm not sure what you mean about trying the suggestions when firing up your scanner. I haven't fixed silver disc problems, that's why I'm taking the camera route...for now.
