An interesting concept which I hope is forthcoming. Whilst the tag "HD" is a little misleading (surprised they didn't go down i-Vinyl or some other rubbish name that people use to sound "modern") the idea of updating production to modern laser cutting of stampers seems so appropriate. Also the change of material sounds a good idea in effect reducing production costs.

The article also name checks Jack White's pressing plant which looks a pretty impressive place. If you haven't seen it there is a video here

My only concern about this is that these LPs will command a premium price, yet will be as "fragile" as normal LPs. Don't get me wrong -- I love vinyl, but the prices being charged for vinyl these days make LPs (and 45s) nothing more than vanity projects that people will hang on a wall or purchase because 'vinyl is cool'.

They're hoping to expand the 22 minute side of an LP to 30 minutes. Has this not already been done?

re Jock_Girl:
You realize all these years we've been wasting space because digital uses two stereo tracks for mono. There is a one-track option if you have an editor that can handle that. 128k was only 64k quality because that's what each track is. So I mean make your one-track 64k etc.
The Sony story is that they had to decide between 16-bit versus 20-bit resolution. The engineers knew that 20 bits was needed for minimal proper sound. That's where the Sony head said 16 bits because that could hold Beethoven's 9th, and they had no more time for development. Now advanced audiophiles know that was regrettable.
