In case you thought you'd seen it all on Ebay, this offer really took my breath away:

Ugh -- some people! This ranks right up there with the vintage Led Zeppelin 78s, antique Beatles albums, and ultra-rare 78 of In The Mood by Glenn Miller.

It reminds me of a 78 that I won that arrived packaged between nothing more than two pieces of corrugated cardboard. It was shipped via the expensive eBay global shipping programme too. Needless to say the package sounded like a rattle when I shook it. Fortunately I got every penny I spent back, but jeez!

So I have to wonder how the seller of the record in this eBay ad will package it and what they would do if it arrived in more than 2 pieces!

Zab - I think the shipping costs ( $37.50) only apply to this side of the pond (Europe). But it looks as if the labels could still be scanned for entry here

Its as low as US $3.79 (Media Mail) in the USA. That said a wee lick of super glue and you might have a playable record, although your finger may be stuck rather permanently to the edge if you're not careful

Thanks for the entertaining responses!

@JLC135: I don't think the uploader (not me, by the way) required any explicit permission since the use of such images for educational, non-commercial purposes falls under the "fair use" exemption of U.S. copyright law (applies since our images are stored on a U.S. server).

There is a long response by the U.S. Copyright Office that goes into more detail (and doesn't, of course, explain it quite as simply because it was written by lawyers): http://www.librarything.com/topic/52153
