Just a question!

is it possible to change the name on a world?

The name DVD & Blu-ray world doesn't seem to fit any more since you have
lots of different formats in this world ( such as DVD, Blu-ray, VHS, Laserdisc, 4K Blu-ray, UMD).
As this world will grow in time there will be alot of more formats to come.
Such as Beta Max, Video 2000, HD DVD, Blu-ray 3D and lots of more to come along.

So , my suggestion is to change the DVD & Blu-ray world name to
"Home Cinema" world.
All releases included nor matter what the format.

Just a thought!!!

Thanx

It is certainly possible as witnessed recently when all the worlds on 45spaces had their names changed at admin level. I had my 45space changed from Coins: UK Currency & Commemoratives to just Coins: UK Commemoratives. So I would say it's possible but will be down to Admins to decide if Home Cinema fits better than DVD & Blu-Ray. Personally I would call it Home Cinema Media as Home Cinema would pull in people adding Amplifiers, Projectors and other bits of hardware.

But perhaps the word cinema might confuse the matter of adding concert videos, straight-to-video documentaries, cartoon collections, trailer collections, TV series', etc. Maybe the word Video over Cinema?

I don't like the 'cinema' part either.

Home Video is apparently a term used across the mediums, so I guess it could be changed to that?

Home Video to means a video you have made yourself at home with a video camera. How about Film Disc and Video.

'Film' makes me think of actual reels of film.

I don't know... it might not be completely accurate, but at least it's easy to understand what a DVD World would entail.

As films come on a variety of media such as VCD, DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K, VHS, Betamax, 8mm, 16mm etc what about just Film Media

Yes, seems fair enough
The following is from Wiki:

Home video is prerecorded video media sold or rented for home viewing.[1]

In a different usage, "home video" refers to amateur video recordings, also known as home movies.[2]

I'm fine with the name as it is, but if I was going to consider changing it, I would go with Video Media.

Even deciding on DVD & Blu-ray World was a bit of a difficult decision - we didn't know what the longterm focus of the world would be. Now it seems to be used for many different formats, but we'll keep the name at the moment because it does explain the focus of the world quite clearly. This could change in the future.

Thanx for you answer here O.C.
And,yes you are right at the point that the name explain the focus of this world.

But another option is do to as you have done in the Video Games World.
One option for each format. (Console & Computer).

The same could be used in a Home Videos World.

Like:
8mm.
Beta Max.
Video 2000.
VHS.
Laser Disc.
VCD.
DVD.
UMD.
HD DVD.
Blu-ray.
Bu-ray 3D.
4K Blu-ray.
and so one... (or if i had forgotten any format)

Each format under one world with a link to Cinema or Tv world.
Cinema world or TV world would be the place to gather all the different releases from around the world in one place.

And please consider changing the world name to Home Videos. ( just like Video Games).

To answer Charlie Chalk and Quad5point1:
here is your answer:
Moving pictures in various formats. Today, video media generally refers to computer files containing video in various digital formats. The term may also refer to physical media such as VHS tapes, DVDs and Blu-ray discs.

So please, do you call your DVD's Or VHS as video Media or do you call them as Home Video?

Thanx.

And to add to your re-examination of the name Home Video, I re-read the thread and should have commented on this earlier...

Would there ever be a database of the world's collective home movies? Nobody would confuse that name with home made videos, which are more often referred to as "home movies" anyway, while "home video" was even adopted by the studios releasing product (ie, Warner Home Video, etc.). Do a Google search on the term "home video" and see the results. The top of the page references Wikipedia's definition...
Google/Wikipedia wrote:

Just sayin'...

Thanx Twistin for supporting my case

What is your thought on adding sub world to the DVD/ Blu-ray world (Soon to be
Home Video world)?
Similar to Video Games World, one (world) for each format and a link to Cinema/ Tv World to gather them all

Is this an option for the database or should we keep it as it is?
But with a new name to the database.
Home Videos World instead of DVD/ Blu-ray World.

I was about to bring up the subject of the Home Videob

I do think home video would be a more inclusive term that could also represent future formats (assuming, heaven forbid, digital downloads don't become the new norm...)

Haven't thought much about sub worlds, but in a pinch I don't see the need in the home video realm, it reminds me of metal music having too many descriptive genres (ie, melodic death thrash-mo-core, lol.) In video games, each format is a culture all its own with unique fan-bases, magazines, ephemera, websites, emulators, etc while I can't imagine that kind of presence for a home video format. By the same token, I also don't see CD single fandom, but I do see the need for it's own world. Also, how would you handle so many multi-format releases? Multi-format world? Nah, I think simplicity should always be the goal. Less clutter is a good thing.
