Theres an English firm doing Lathe cuts - cant remember the details though.

Check the first video - they recommend to change the needle after every play!

That is correct when using steel needles they should be replaced after the first play but most users didn't and carried on using the needle until the point was completely flat. That's why most old 78's sound so crackly.
