Is the rumour about El Paso being on a Canadian 78 true? I always assumed so but could they really fit a 4:30 song on a 78?

It is unlikely. The last Columbia 78 in Canada was in 1959 - this article indicates August. I have one from May of that year. El Paso was released on a 45 in October. Release on 78 was driven by overall demand and while El Paso did top the charts that wasn't until November/ December that is past the August date.

A 78 did appear in South Africa - see it here

I dropped a question under that entry asking if this is indeed the complete version of the song or if it omits the one verse that starts "Just for a moment I stood there in silence..." which is often omitted. I've never heard the 45 so I don't know if that verse is cut there either.
